Chandigarh: Student beaten, mother dies of shock

Demanding money back from a teacher during a trekking trip to Manali proved costly for a class VIII student, who was badly beaten up, his classmates alleged.




Distressed over her son being beaten up, the mother of 13-year-old Rattanpreet, died of shock, the boy's family claimed.



After the incident, the school authorities have sacked the guilty teacher, while an inquiry has been ordered against another teacher, who had accompanied the students to the trip last week.



Last week, 56 students of Yadavindra Public School had gone on a week-long trip to Manali, about 310 km from here, with three teachers.



On May 28, 13-year-old Rattanpreet was allegedly slapped and severely beaten up by Harish Kumar when the boy demanded his money back from him, victim's classmates, who accompanied him during the trip, alleged.



On May 29, Rattanpreet made a distress call to his parents stating that he was allegedly beaten up by the two teachers at the camp. Hearing the news, the boy's parents went to the school to inquire about the matter.



Rattanpreet's mother, depressed over the incident, Gurpreet Kaur experienced chest pain and died while being taken to a hospital.



Kumar has been sacked by the school authorities, while an inquiry has been ordered against another teacher Anil Pathania, who was among the three teachers who were part of the trip, on the issue of beating up of Singh.



"We are inquiring into the allegations made against another teacher Anil Pathania. Corporal punishment is totally unacceptable. If found guilty then he will also have to leave his job," School Vice Principal Anita Kashayap told reporters at Mohali.



All the facts are being verified and all aspects are being looked into, she added.



Students who returned from the trip have also leveled allegations against the two teachers that they took away the money beyond Rs 500 which they were allowed to keep in their possession.



"Corporal punishment should not be allowed at any cost. I hope the school authorities will take strict action against the erring teachers by lodging criminal complaint against them," Barinder Singh, victim's father, said.



Yesterday, YPS principal Harish Dhillon had visited Rattanpreet's house and assured all possible support from the school management.

Some how it seems both are seperate incidents. Tough to comment. But surely one should be strong and brave. May god bless her soul.
